Now here are a few extra notes from the event:
1)  In the semis, due to a shortage of refs available on premises, the Houston Elite & T Mac All Stars were forced to wait until the Hstn Elite finally decided to step aside and grant T Mac a pass into the championship game.  “When good company doesn’t have anywhere to sleep, give up your bed,” cited event director and Hstn Elite coach Rick Nelson while giving a good stab at a Hicks-ism to support his decision. Â
2)  Texas A&M’s Billy Gillespie and TSU’s Ronnie Courtney were the only two head coaches still left in the building by the time the championship game got underway.  Also, Louisiana Tech, Rice, Holy Cross, and St Edwards were the only other schools still grinding at day’s end…
3)  Former assistant coaches (Arizona St) Tony Benford, (SMU) “Q” Anderson, (Prairie View) Byron Rimm was checking out the action and doing their homework in wake of landing expected gigs within the next week or so.  Heck, Rimm so loved PV enough to still wear a shirt with the school’s logo on the front.Â
4)  Now you guys see why Nathan Walkup (Hstn Hoopstars) is listed as the #6 player in Greater Houston (and that may be too doggone low).  LSU caught a glimpse of the long slender yet tough wing forward, is expected to visit the school this week to officially extend an offer.   Still, Texas A&M will be tough to beat on this one.
5)  DeAndre Jordan injured his leg early in the second half of the Swoosh Blue’s loss to the Hoopstars.   He’s probable for the Kingwood Classic.
6)  Texas Blue Chips had the tallest frontcourt of the event, but managed to go only 1-3 (including a pair of double digit losses to Hoopstars and Westside All Stars)
7)  After beating Houston Elite at the Spring Ice Breaker and Texas Blue Chips & both Houston Swoosh teams this past weekend, Westside All Stars coach Al Jones proclaimed, “Yo, we are the number one Reebok team in Texas!”  Whoaaa nelly… the Dallas Mustangs Blue coaches do read this board.Â
8)  Coaches and teams were forced to wait while the teams were re-seeded after pool play ended.  Afterwards, the event’s defending champ T-Mac (who went 2-0 in pool play) didn’t get a bye while the Lousiana Stars 16s did.
9)   Meech Goodson (Hstn Select) did not play after suffering a wrist injury in the second round of bracket play.  He’s doubtful for the KWC.
10)  Toney McCray (TJ Ford Elite) is back to his old form after sitting out the entire HS season (per doctor’s orders) with minor heart precautions.  McCray 6′6 wf (Elkins HS 2007) burst onto the scene with a barrage of three pointers at last year’s Vegas Super 64
11)  Host team Hstn Elite advanced into the semis of each age division.  Hstn Select advanced into the semis of each age division, except 17s. Â
12)  Byron Gibson who normally coaches the Hstn Hoops 17s didn’t travel to Vegas, instead he chose to coach his newly formed Hstn Hoops 16s team that has been together only two weeks.  Still, they managed to advance to the title game, and received a big tournament from Kevin Foster 6′2 wf (Morton Ranch HS). Â
